Carton Blanc (Game Changer)
La Villette, Paris
A collaboration with Villette Makerz

“Game Changer” reconsidered the normative principles of sport and reframed them as movement for and by neurodivergent participants. More specifically, through design and making, the neurodivergent participants were invited to reinvent, combine, and expand the dimensions of sport: space, rules, objects, time, clothing.

Participants were given access to tools and materials that have the earmarks of a professional design project. They were treated as creators. The objects they made are an embodiment of their abilities and provide a positive understanding and experience of neurodivergence. The materials provided were all salvaged, recycled and donated.

The French name for “Game Changer”, “Carton Blanc” hopes to turn upside down established rules in sport and to suggest an open attitude through design. It is a reference to white canvas where everything is possible. “Carton Blanc” is also a nod to white cards that were first used in soccer in 2018 in Portugal to celebrate and reward unusual positive actions and mutual respect, as opposed to “cartons rouge” and “cartons jaunes” (penalty cards) that are tokens of exclusion and sanction.
